We look at Sudan, one of the most notorious slave states. Here slavery is widely used as a weapon of war by the Muslim north against the Christian and animist south.

In the ruins of a burnt-out village, lie the heaped, rotting bodies of slaves who tried to escape the northern raiders who stalk the southern Sudan. Slaving here has killed thousands of people; the survivors have horrific tales to tell. Matihiane and her children were captured a year ago. They were marched for 10 days, given food mixed with sand and urine, beaten if they slowed and sent to work. On arriving with her new master, he forcibly circumcised her. Such inhumanity has led many to come to the aid of the southern Sudanese. Baroness Cox, is the most controversial. Sitting with the slavers in the shade of a tree, she exchanges greetings and begins to barter for the human booty. Today, $325,000 changes hands for the freedom of 325 slaves. While her solution offers immediate salvation for the few, it could also be responsible for the rising number of slave raids. The UN and other humanitarian agencies will not work with her. She though is adamant; “It would go on whether we were here or not…it isn’t going to change the war.” Even for the slaves she frees though, liberty comes with no guarantees. The only thing that can buy their peace of mind is an end to the war.

Several experts voice their concerns and send an alarming message to Canadians that it is time to put an end to undemocratic trade deals that are developed with input from only the largest corporations.

European Commission production: “The EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is a world first and a major weapon in Europe’s fight against climate change. The innovative system has turned carbon dioxide emissions into a tradeable commodity. They can now be bought and sold like any other of the thousands of products traded on world markets today. The scheme works by placing a limit or a ‘cap’ on the amount of carbon dioxide participating installations - currently around 10,500 across the European Union - can emit every year. If an installation emits more than its allowance, it must either pay a very hefty fine or buy surplus allowances from companies that have managed to stay below their limit. The system ensures that overall CO2 emissions from the plants covered are cut in the most cost effective way. A tyrannical regime unmasked, to reveal persecution and torture of “epidemic proportions”.

The Death Penalty in China is increasingly prescribed as a panacea for social ills. Prisoners with death sentences are paraded through the streets with placards advertising their crimes. We profile Muslims, Christians and artists who have suffered discrimination, intimidation and torture. Tang Boqiao fled after the Tiananmen Square massacre. A former PSB (Public Security Bureau) officer reveals that many policemen use electric batons to inflict maximum misery. In court, lawyers have inadequate time to prepare a defence for their clients. A lawyer speaks out against a legal system with a conviction rate of well over 90%. While foreign companies enjoy cheap labour, Chinese workers have few civil rights. If they complain, they are dispatched to bleak labour camps where they undergo ‘re-education’. Even foreign businessmen are vulnerable. James Peng was sentenced to 17 years after he argued with his Chinese partner. His fate highlights the dangers of dealing with a country that has little respect for individual life.
